A large wave had brought the waves of the South Coast Highway to the middle of the A1, the Southern Coast Herald reported today.

Footage showed the couple, aged in their early 30s, being swept away by the wind, which hit just past the bridge on the south of Wales coast.

They were on the main road in Blyth, Mersey, when they were swept out onto the roadway by the wave.

The incident has created a safety warning for drivers heading southbound onto the road, it added.

A spokesperson for the Southern Coast Highway Authority (SCHIA) said: "When the wave was released there were quite a few people on the road and it seems like a bit of a loose piece of sand at times.

"The SCHIA crew, along with police, firefighters and other emergency services, were on site at 6.20pm yesterday and were able to maintain the road in good condition before it closed as a priority road.

"The area is currently a closed area so anyone heading for the coast is advised to check to see if any vehicles have left through the road closed."

Footage shows a large wave approaching the bridge

Local resident Jonathan Toms said it was difficult to tell if the wave had been pushed out of the road or just carried on, with a couple clinging to the metal posts of the bridge, which has no guardrails.

He said: "It's been the same with waves on previous occasions and it certainly won't be the same now.

"There are plenty of people on this road to have an accident.

"There is just nothing for them to do at this moment."

Toms added: "The man on the bridge's bike is wearing a life jacket, but it's too late to make it down.

"There are a large number of vehicles passing through, although no one is being pushed off.

"What we're trying to do is just keep moving to avoid the waves coming across the road."
